MTVP: Voice Teacher Intensive

We are SO excited to announce the launch of our fully realized Teacher Training Course…MTVP: Voice Teacher Intensive. We have spent the last few years dreaming up a course that is designed to help teachers build upon their skills in musical theatre voice pedagogy. We wanted to make sure that this course was not only filled with the highest quality educational content and resources, but was delivered in a way that elevates the material. This is why we are also launching our BRAND NEW learning platform PracticeRoom. PracticeRoom will be your online learning hub where you will have access to the course, can communicate with teachers and class mates, upload/download teaching assignments, and engage with a community of learners. The spring semester cohort of MTVP: Voice Teacher Intensive will be the inaugural class to use PracticeRoom and will influence much of the future development of this learning tool as we continue to build ever better resources for teachers and performers.

Dream 2024

What is MTVP?

MTVP is the product of endless hours of trying to understand not only how to best support singers, but how to best support the TEACHERS who are responsible for guiding those singers. So often teacher education stops at the step that is focused on singers and forgets to include what skills are most important for TEACHERS. Understanding ‘what’ to teach is only one piece of the pie. Understanding ‘how’ to teach, ‘why’ you select certain strategies, and ‘how’ we improve are the questions that challenge teachers as they continue along their careers. That is why we created MTVP.

The MTVP Teacher Intensive is a course designed to build the skills teachers need to more successfully navigate education in the voice studio and to continue to grow throughout your career. Throughout this 12-Week Course we will help you build a foundation of skill that will change how you teach and we will offer you a framework to help you successfully organize and apply all of the new information.

What does this class include?

At BroadwayVox we organize teacher skill development into 3 areas:

Learning by Doing, Critical Listening, and Making the sounds.

Learning by doing is all about scaffolding your applied teaching skills is a systematic way. We will offer you a ton of conceptual information on how to ‘think’ about teaching, how to systematically apply voice building principals, and frame for applying and reflecting on each concept.

Critical Listening is all about refining your listening skills. We believe this is one of the BIGGEST missing areas in teacher education. Understanding how to strategically identify sounds, categorize them, and understand how they relate to a desired vocal goal is one of the primary skills a teacher must have. In critical listening we help you understand how you can refine your listening skills, we offer you a framework for organizing identified sounds, and provide tons of examples and practice exercises for building these skills systematically.

Making the sounds is all about…you guessed it…making the sounds! We believe every teacher has to not only know what sounds they guide a musical theatre singer towards, but they have to have experience MAKING the sounds. We offer you a ton of tools and exercises for helping you have a more embodied understanding of the sounds you teach in the studio. If you believe that your students can learn these concepts, you have to believe that YOU can learn them too!

How is MTVP structured?

MTVP is structured as a Hybrid Class Model. Over the course of 12-Weeks We offer you weekly online lessons which are structured around Lectures, Homework, and weekly Teacher’s Lab.

During the week you will study the video lectures, all of which come with guided questions and visual aids to help support your learning. You will complete the homework which consists of both reflection questions and a ‘Learning by doing” exercise designed to help you apply the concepts from the lectures to your teaching that week. Then, in the weekly Teachers Lab the class will meet for a Live Session with Joey and Jared. The teacher’s lab always has a live critical listening and making the sounds application as well as a guided reflection on the lessons from the week.

What makes MTVP different?

MTVP is our response to what teachers NEED. We have built a course that not only provides a framework for building the essential skills a teacher needs, but  allows you to continuously build upon your teaching ability throughout your career. By breaking down not just WHAT teacher’s need to know, but HOW teacher’s learn, we have created something truly innovative to the field of voice teacher education. Our belief is that this course will change not only how you think about singing but how you think about teaching, and further, how you think about learning to teach. Finally, our commitment to every teacher that takes this course, is we will continue to learn and grow with you. Much like singing, learning to teach never ends. Similarly, learning to teach teachers never ends. We will continue to grow and refine the concepts introduced in this course for as long as we are teaching it. So, forever, I guess?

Who is this class for?

The MTVP: Voice Teacher Intensive is designed for vocal educators at any stage of their journey. If you're a beginning teacher, this course provides the perfect framework to process your teaching questions and build the foundation for your skill development. For more advanced teachers, MTVP will expand your toolkit with new methods for organizing your thinking and tackling teaching challenges. Testimonials:

This course is a voice teacher’s and singer’s dream! Taught by the best of the best, Jared and Joey break down the fundamentals of vocal pedagogy from the history behind voice ped, video examples, group warm up exercises, and endless gifs. My teaching grew so much from just one session, I felt more confident in my lessons knowing I had a team of fellow voice teachers supporting and educating me. Voice teachers supporting voice teachers is a powerful thing!
